| why another blog? why a quiet revolution? | |
In a nutshell, to answer the first question, is because I can.
Beyond that, because it’s about music.
I run a rehearsal space, The Rock Garden, where I’m surrounded by music for a good part of everyday. From here my partner and I have started a record label From Here To There Records. We have released one album to date [kinda] and now manage Their Majesties. Our local weekly alternative paper The Coast called them the next big thing in Halifax rock in a recent cover story on the boys. We like them because a) they’re good peoples and b) they make great music [listen].
While doing some business research on starting the label I took more of an interest in the industry end of things. Watched in amazement as the RIAA sued music fans left and right. The majors pushed restrictive DRM.
At the same time I started finding dozens of indie labels [profiles in the future] out there that could serve as examples to follow. Bands [likewise to follow] started coming out of the wood work. Between finding artists on the aforementioned labels, via P2P networks, mp3 blogs and countless other sources [almost exclusively all online] my music listening habits had been transformed and for the better.
I believe, that while revolution might be strong, there is a real change taking place that might favor the artist. Hence - in part - the name. You may have to dig a lil’ deeper, search a lil’ harder and wade through a lot of crap still, but it beats the present day alternative by far in my books.
