What’s in store for a quiet revolution in 2007

Posted in Sounds Local on 12.31.06 15:03

Some specifics coming between the 2nd and 14th include:

  • A look at the story of the year in music for 2006
  • Prediction of 2007’s story of the year
  • A quick review of bands that called it quits in ‘06
  • The 2006 Best of the East Coast list [Jan 8th]

    In general here’s what’s planned:
    More music
Local and otherwise. had some issues with file names for local music that made it tricky to find stuff, hopefully that is all worked out and more local music can be shared here. Also plan to include more music period in posts in the New Year.

As part of this watch for the first, and then regular Halifax/EC scenecasts.

    More Local News/Content
Pretty straight forward. Want to help with this, send any news or online sightings of locals to info (at) aquietrevolution.com

    More Local Profiles
Bands/music are covered above, this will look at the folks that provide bands places to play, set up shows, cover the scene and so forth. Too many good people there to consider to even try and list a few off the top of my head now.

    Defining a quiet revolution
The whole point of this site is to promote, support and ideally help develop the local music community as well as the independent scene at large. There’s particular points that make this worth doing and serve as the motivation for the site and it’s name and they’ll be explored in the New Year

Introduction of a couple regular features
    Something that will be called BOP!; an as yet unnamed feature that will bring in some outsiders for their POV while also introducing them to readers [this should be pretty good];

    An Argument for Free Music
Pretty self explanatory - I’ll be looking for examples, role models, facts, quotes and anything else I can find to build a case supporting the giving away of your music.

    Repossessed Zine Content
I tried getting a local zine going previously, and while talks have taken place regarding the return of a print zine lots of material has been collected that will be used on here starting in the New Year

    More contributors?
We’ll see - hope to have a few guest contributions at minimum

Have a happy and safe New Year’s!!!!!!!!!!!

Divorce Records - A look back & a look forward
Posted in Artists/Bands, Labels, Sounds Local on 12.31.06 14:11

Divorce Records might not release stuff for everyone, but I bet if you looked at/listened to their full list of releases you might be surprised just how diverse their stuff is, but regardless they do what they do very well.

I think we’ll have to have an official Divorce week in 2007 to fully highlight what they are up to and what they’ve done to date. For now here’s an email set out recapping 2006 and highlighting some plans for 2007.

I hope everyone is well. Divorce had a great year and is gearing up for a bunch of new projects in 2007. I’ve included our latest reviews, a list of what to expect next year, and a few other things. Thanks.

Be Bad/Attack Mode Spilt 7″ Reviewed in January 2007 MAXIMUMROCKNROLL:
“Starting with the art, which is obscurest but kind of spooky and cool, this record is obviously not a generic punk or whacky thrash record. ATTACK MODE starts things off by playing thuggish and kind of scary art-damaged skronk, sounding vocally like a ‘No New York’ type band but with music that is less obnoxiously cerebral. There is a sort of modern indie punk element to them too but it is buried under the angry guitars. Me Like. On the flip, BE BAD plays in a very similar style, calling strongly to mind the ’90s and bands like JESUS LIZARD.There are a few bands in North America mining this territory, which would get extremely annoying very fast if it becomes a full blown trend, but as it is, the style seems interesting and almost intrepid for the couple of good bands holding it down for ’90s noise freaks the world over.” BUY NOW

Husband and Knife’s debut was listed in the Coast’s Top 100 Discs of 2006. Here’s the review: “This album is absolute. From the creaky four track recordings to the morbid song topics, the mood never sways. It’s worth every moment you can give it. Somewhere between early Elliot Smith and Eric’s Trip’s more acoustic moments. It’s like a call from an old friend that you didn’t necessarily want to hear from.” BUY NOW

    Torso in Dead Angel #9:
“Check it out, doom childe: The first full-length release from Canadian harsh-noise adherent Sandy Saunders, aka Torso (who will also be appearing next spring on a split with Unicorn). What the release offers is eight tracks of brooding ambient power electronics, presented in varying slices of audio nihilism. The sounds are harsh (as are the vocals, mixed in to sound like part of the noise much of the time), but the attack is not full-on; rather, many of the tracks feature a thick layer of processed ambient noise within which other sonic ugliness happens, or some relative variation of this strategy. Rumbling electronic sounds play an important part of Torso’s aesthetic as well, along with the passion for dark-ambient stylings and field recordings. In some ways (especially structurally and tonally) this has more in common with free-jazz than noise, strictly speaking, but free-jazz was rarely ever this loud and fond of microphones feeding back. Plenty of variation, plenty of nastiness on display here. Fans of the Unicorn and Sky Burial discs mentioned a while back will probably find this of considerable interest.” BUY NOW

Gilbert Switzer in Razorcake #35: “It’s always refreshing - when during the tedious chore of laboring through shitty music to review - to be slapped upside the head unceremoniously and without notice. And that’s exactly what Nova Scotia’s Gilbert Switzer did. This band is a three-piece comprised of a singer, guitar player, and two piece stand-up drummer who dishes out deranged and deconstructed punk rock. Think Flipper, early Butthole Surfers, the Birthday Party, and Crime all tossed into a rocks glass and filled with absinthe. This is art punk of the highest degree.” BUY NOW

The Hold are featured on a new compilation of Canadian punk called “Killed by Canada”. I haven’t seen the disc yet, but I’m told it features over 50 bands. Find this!

Divorce Distro: I’ve been doing some trading with labels I like. I’ll be doing a lot more next year, but for now I have the following albums for sale:

Bastard Noise Three Dollar Date 3″ - $6

Six Doors a housepig compilation featuring Bastard Noise, Aube, Unicorn, and more - $10

The Chitz Break The Cycle 12″ - $8 (very last one)

If you’re interested, email me at chikwhite@gmail.com

    Confirmed for 2007:

    - Valentine’s Day Label Showcase in Halifax

    - Unicorn/Torso Split CD

    - Experimental Music Festival in Halifax

    - Be Bad Full Length CD

Other good possibilities include releases by Husband and Knife, Shit Cook, and Attack Mode. Torso and Shit Cook may do a big tour with an awesome band TBA, and Be Bad are planning to go to Europe!

Thanks again for your support. Albums can be purchased in our new online store, at select distros, and at the good record stores in Halifax.

I am a regular reader of the Viral Garden but when I first saw this post, I assumed it was going to be limited to marketing/branding related blogs. Just before Christmas though I saw that Hypebot had jumped on to this, so why not. I’m planning on promoting this site more in the new year and this is as good as any way to start things off.

Here’s the deal: In an effort to bring more link-love to those blogs that I feel aren’t getting their due, I’ve created a small list of blogs below that I’ve linked to. The idea is to create a meme built around giving link-love to the blogs that deserve it, and hopefully turn Technorati’s system of using a blog’s # of links to determine its ‘authority’, on its ear.

Joel Plaskett NMC Song of the Day + NYE Shows
Posted in Artists/Bands, Shows, Sounds Local on 12.28.06 14:58

Joel’s “A Million Dollars” is selected as NMC’s Song of the Day for today.

“Let’s get wrecked on Rolling Rock and stroll down to the sea” is my lyric of the year… it’s Joel Plaskett at his best, taking us along for the ride, and the Canadian collective experience.

Folks in Halifax will be able to catch Joel [assuming you already have you tickets, both shows are now sold out] for what has be come an annual tradition when he performs on New Year’s eve at the Marquee Club with the Golden Dogs. On the 30th there is also an all ages show at the Marquee with the same line up.

Watch for a new album sometime before summer.

    Dutch Mason 1938-2006 - R.I.P.
Posted in Artists/Bands, Sounds Local on 12.28.06 14:42

It was sad to come back from break to see news of this: Canadian blues pioneer Dutch Mason dies.

Our condolences go out to all his family and friends.

Happy Holidays - daily updates return in the New Year
    Posted in Artists/Bands on 12.23.06 00:06

Here’s hoping anyone that reads this is enjoying the holidays.

Between Dec 23rd and Jan. 2nd posts are likely to be erratic.
But in the New Year we’ll pick up a regular post a day minimum schedule [during the week anyways]. There’s a lot of great stuff happening locally to try and cover.
There will definitely be posts between now and the New Year as well so watch out for those.

Be safe and enjoy the company of friends and family
    Cheers!

Post Thrush Hermit = Camouflage Nights
Posted in Artists/Bands, MP3s, Sounds Local, Videos on 12.21.06 18:06

Nope, not Joel pulling a Matt Mays inspired jump into electronica + whatever, but former band mates Ian McGettigan & Rob Benvie’s new project Camouflage Nights [and it’s not THAT new to begin with, been around since 2005 at least]. But I never heard anything about it until someone posted a link on a message board to a video for one of their songs - five five minutes

Their myspace page [two songs, one is the same as the video below, other is sans video - neither can be downloaded]
I do appreciate their take on “the unfortunately ubiquitous Myspace” though.

Not sure what I think of the music [videos are well shot]. I think I’d have to hear a full release and/or see them live to call myself a fan. It’s hardly bad and a surprise change from what most people would likely know them for/from.

And here’s the video for another one of their songs “It Could Be Love”:

Two Issues Facing Digital Music: One for Fans, One for Labels
Posted in Business, Digital, MP3s on 12.21.06 17:46

    For Music Fans
The Digital Music Weblog had a post on a company called Peerflix, that is attempting to address one big concern for digital media purchasers, that being the lack of any resale value [or market] for digital purchases. Much as digital distro has eliminated many of the cost associated with traditional distribution it’s also eroded the need for a used market.

Note: See the comments in the above link to find an existing company running a secondary market for digital media.

    For Music Labels
For music labels it’s about keeping thieves fans from posting music online for anyone to have, or tracking those that do. Wired’s Listening Post covers a new alliance supporting digital watermarks as one solution. Comments show it might not be as fool proof as hoped for.
