| EMI does something already done before [again] and people trip over themselves to spread the word [again] | Comments Off |
Today’s title definitely came out more bitter than intended but…..
It does sum up my feelings I suppose on how fucked up things can be when an independent/unknown is innovative/trend-setting or what have you and gets nothing for it.
Of course, a big piece of the puzzle is reach, which is directly related to your access to cold hard cash. The other big trip up for innovators is timing, too soon and well….the big guys wait for you to whither and then introduce something new and exciting to the unknowing masses!!!
Not exactly sure what the case is in this example but this musicmap has been around for at least 2 years or so. I’ve seen it mentioned on various sites in the past [I know lifehacker was one for sure and I think someone on Digg posted it previously]. Outside that though, no one went nuts about it. And my guess is that EMI’s version, tuneglue, is musicmap, with EMI having either bought or licensed the original for their site. I can’t find any mention of DimVision’s version and TuneGlue but here’s hoping someone got paid there.
In my brief look at tuneglue the only noticeable difference, outside the change in basic appearances, was the addition of last.fm data into the mix which should improve the recommendations over the Amazon only version. But in my comparisons I got the same artists each time regardless. Oh, and that EMI artists’ get a pimped out glowing ring of rainbows on TuneGlue!!!
Coolfer covers it with a basic run down, a brief talk of what might be in store for music recommendation and social networking plus some additional reading on last.fm.
Hypebot warns: Be careful; it’s addictive.
And Grant at the Digital Music Weblog appears to be a fan as well.
Stereogum is not so impressed: Interesting idea, but not so useful yet. Nor are their readers.
For the curious/bored: The agains in the title refer to EMI announcing it would be testing the release of some singles as MP3s without DRM. Already done by majors and a staple for indies. But of course it received a great deal of attention. I’m just not sure why. Quick summary here.
