I can get behind this: Boycott the RIAA in March

I haven’t bought* an RIAA affiliated album since at least 2005 so this won’t be hard to begin with for myself, but you really should consider doing this if you do buy RIAA member label releases.

Not sure if the new CD you want, sorry digital download, is an RIAA label or not? Well then check out RIAA Radar [http://www.riaaradar.com/]. A great site to a) help you determine if you’d desired purchase is RIAA affiliated or not, and b) if so it will provide some non-RIAA contaminated recommendations.

Why boycott the RIAA?
Well specifically this post is stemming from a call by the folks at Gizmodo to stand up against them:

With that in mind, Gizmodo is declaring the month of March Boycott the RIAA month. We want to get the word out to as many people as humanly possible that we can all send a message by refusing to buy any album put out by an RIAA label.

You can watch for daily updates during the month regarding the boycott and other RIAA news as as well

But in case you can’t understand why anyone would want to do that, here’s some other headlines and news I’ve been meaning to mention over the past while:

  • RIAA Launches P2PLawsuits.com

On the site, students whose universities have agreed to turn over student names to the RIAA and users whose ISPs have agreed to turn over subscriber names to the RIAA can apply for a settlement by entering their case number, and even pay their settlement online, which the RIAA promises will be represent “a substantial discount” from what they would have had to settle for before this campaign launched.

But you say they were found to have stolen music and should pay!? Well thing is they weren’t found guilty of anything. No court gets involved, it’s straight to the bank for the RIAA with your money. Seriously, if you are in the States and approached by the RIAA go to court. Fight it. When you win they’ll have to pay your legal bills.
So the above simply is more BS from the RIAA.

  • As part of its ongoing copyright crackdown, the association has already sued about 18,000 computer users nationwide [U.S.] since September 2003.

I could go on with dozens of links but it’s pointless – the RIAA is scared, threatening anyone and everyone it can in order to maintain some semblance of control. Let it go.

oh, their is of course the constantly updated Recording Industry vs The People

Lots of happy RIAA related stories there.
