Issues in regards to setting up an account for Chuck so until I get that worked out, here goes:
CMW Recap: Day One, Part One
Chuck Teed
Before I get started, I should give those who aren’t in the know a little
backgrounder on Canadian Music Week. According to their website, the CMW is
the longest running music conference in the country, combining information
sessions, workshops, tradeshows, award shows and showcases into one big
weekend of fun for music fans, artists and industry professionals. Picture
the ECMA weekend minus the big ass award show at the end of the weekend and you’ll have yourself a pretty good idea of what you’re getting yourself
into.
Anyway, this was my first year attending CMW, so I tried my best to get into
the thick of things and hit as many events as possible. Here’s a recap of my
weekend activities.

I can’t even be bothered thinking of something snarky to say so…it could be a good experience/opportunity.

What Happened
Last Wednesday afternoon a fire broke out at the North End Diner. Eventually spreading throughout the diner, the North End Pub and apartments upstairs the entire complex was destroyed.

This would apply more so to any US readers we have [surprisingly it appears we do have at least a few]. But even to be fully relevant they would need to be in university or at least know university students. And, well technically be part of a university’s administration that is the subject of the RIAAs crackdown on students [if anyone reading this actually meets those criteria and can prove it you will be this blog’s first prize winner! (prize TBD)].
So why post this for everyone else? (more…)

“The Canada Stand will function as business and meeting centre at SXSW’s music trade show. The stand will house meeting areas, display areas, a message centre and a resource centre for all things Canadian. The Canadian BBQ, the essential jump-start to the Canadian experience at SXSW, will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2007, from 3 to 7p.m. in Brush Square Park. Partners are looking to reap individual benefit from the strong unified presence of Canadians at SXSW and from the multi-faceted outreach of the Canadian Blast programme. (more…)
Michael Arrington at TechCrunch provides some suggestions for software that allows you to create private P2P file sharing networks such as AllPeers.
If you need to hear some RIAA music this month, or anytime, these services might be the way to go.
Northern Mics is a Halifax-based online hip-hop magazine I recently stumbled across. The latest issue (#2) profiles the legendary Jorun. Here is what the DJ/producer had to say about the state of live hip-hop in town:
There are a lot of local artists releasing CD’s, but there does not seem to be a lot shows. What do you think is the biggest contributor for this? And is there any solutions?
Jorun: Clubs have closed down. A lot of the main clubs that were hosting live shows in general. I think a lot of things contribute to the lack of shows other than that. I think a lot of people promote them poorly and expect that just because you post it on an internet board that people will come. People have gotten lazy since the internet era began and add that with the fact that you could have 9 rap shows in one night, but 2 of them are professionally put together or are good at what they do. There are names in the city that pull crowds instantly and they can pack a show without a doubt, but the problem is that there isn’t always a place for them to play weekly that is easily accessible location wise. Ever since the Khyber closed down, it’s been scattered. The simple solution would be to encourage kids to stop wanting to be rappers when they grow up and start being club owners! We have enough rappers but not enough club owners. Definitely an imbalance.
