Prince Edward Island’s Two Hours Traffic, whose music was previously heard on episodes of the soapy dramas Ghost Whisperer, One Tree Hill, The O.C., and Whistler, has landed a song on the soundtrack to the Hollywood romantic comedy In the Land of Women. Oddly enough, this film is directed by Jon Kasdan, the brother of Jake Kasdan who directed the film I mentioned here that recently featured Joel Plaskett’s tune Television Set. Joel Plaskett happened to produce Two Hours Traffic’s debut self-titled full length release in 2005.

Fat Cat Records | Article and Resource for Indie Labels/Music Fans + Label Interviews
Posted in Advice, Business, Labels on 04.26.07 19:07

A couple of Monday ago Hypebot pointed a link to an article on Fat Cat Records.

From the article:

And FatCat has also been building an extensive DIY resource guide on its site, featuring contacts and information on companies that provide distribution, mastering and manufacturing in multiple countries.

Yet even as it grows, FatCat is still firmly rooted in DIY culture. Knight insists the label listens to every demo it receives and has started featuring the best of them on its Web site. So far, Knight says, seven acts have been signed via his label’s site (http://fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/home.php).

When I was researching info for starting a label I found Fat Cat’s site and while lacking in info for this side of the Atlantic I was as taken with the idea and their desire to try and provide info for others who would follow in their steps as much as I was by the info available.

Their sharing, and listening to, all demos received is also a commendable quality for independent labels to consider.

Fat Cat’s Home Page

——————————————————————————–

One of the funnest and most informative resources I came across for info on starting a label was actually via online music retailer Insound’s site. Their Featured Label section [under Labels in the navigation their site] features a series of interviews with literally hundreds of labels that have releases available via Insound. You get a great sense of what the people behind the labels are all about based on their responses [some are great, some don’t seem to care about the interviews apparently]. Beyond being entertaining the interviews are also extremely informative with questions including:

  • Describe one disaster that you/the label overcame and how it’s affected you since.
  • How many demos do you get per month, and what do you do with them?
  • Describe your label’s headquarters.
  • How did you decide to start the business?
  • What was your first release?
  • How did you come up with your label’s name, etc.?

Definitely worth checking out for some great insight and good stories for anyone interested in starting a label or wondering about running one in general.

New Releases at the Rock Garden
Posted in Artists/Bands, CDs, Labels, Releases, Sounds Local, Vinyl on 04.25.07 18:47

We have some of the sharp looking [just sounds ok*] VKNGS 12″s

The also sharp looking A History Of debut EP Victory Atlas is now here - Paul Hammond did a very nice layout on that one [I have some posts in the works regarding design and music - Paul is just one local talent that shines in his designs for local bands]

And it was no scene day here as we got some of everything in:

  • sleepless nights - hang up
  • joyless streets - carrots & sticks
  • ryan cook - sunny acres
  • the establishment - economy radio
  • capsized - a structure of motion
  • share - can can missile
  • sleepless nights & thomas/richard - split 7″

* I kid Jim

And in fine style I failed to notice.

Been extremely busy lately, essentially in the process of deciding what I’ll be up to for the next few years exactly [it’ll be music + business/entrepreneurial related [?] but which opportunities actually unfold is the question]. Plus dealing with stuff already happening. While busy I’m am honestly thankful I will never have to ever say I am bored again - and that’s a great thing. Another great thing I’m thankful for is the continued support of the many bands and musicians who have been coming here since we opened and continue to discover the space. (more…)

The White Stripes To Play Canada (Beyond Montreal)

Icky Thump Single

The White Stripes are embarking on a Canadian tour (that’s the ten provinces and three territories…a possible revelation to some upper Canadian and West Coast bands).

Having never done a full tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog. We want to take this tour to the far reaches of the Canadian landscape. From the ocean to the permafrost. The best way for us to do that is ensure that we perform in every province and territory in the country, from the Yukon to Prince Edward Island. Another special moment of this tour is the show which will occur in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on July 14th, The White Stripes’ Tenth Anniversary —Jack White

  • 10-JUL-07 : Moncton Coliseum Arena, Moncton, NB
  • 11-JUL-07 : Charlottetown Civic Centre, Charlottetown, PE
  • 13-JUL-07 : Cunard Centre*, Halifax, NS
  • 14-JUL-07 : Savoy Theatre, Glace Bay, NS
  • 16-JUL-07 : Mile One Centre, St. John’s, NL

Check out the band’s tour page for more info.

Note: I heard that Jack White (originally a Gillis) has family connections in Antigonish…where is the Chuggles show?

* Somehow I didn’t know this place existed.
