| Fat Cat Records | Article and Resource for Indie Labels/Music Fans + Label Interviews | |
A couple of Monday ago Hypebot pointed a link to an article on Fat Cat Records.
From the article:
And FatCat has also been building an extensive DIY resource guide on its site, featuring contacts and information on companies that provide distribution, mastering and manufacturing in multiple countries.
Yet even as it grows, FatCat is still firmly rooted in DIY culture. Knight insists the label listens to every demo it receives and has started featuring the best of them on its Web site. So far, Knight says, seven acts have been signed via his label’s site (http://fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/home.php).
When I was researching info for starting a label I found Fat Cat’s site and while lacking in info for this side of the Atlantic I was as taken with the idea and their desire to try and provide info for others who would follow in their steps as much as I was by the info available.
Their sharing, and listening to, all demos received is also a commendable quality for independent labels to consider.

One of the funnest and most informative resources I came across for info on starting a label was actually via online music retailer Insound’s site. Their Featured Label section [under Labels in the navigation their site] features a series of interviews with literally hundreds of labels that have releases available via Insound. You get a great sense of what the people behind the labels are all about based on their responses [some are great, some don’t seem to care about the interviews apparently]. Beyond being entertaining the interviews are also extremely informative with questions including:
- Describe one disaster that you/the label overcame and how it’s affected you since.
- How many demos do you get per month, and what do you do with them?
- Describe your label’s headquarters.
- How did you decide to start the business?
- What was your first release?
- How did you come up with your label’s name, etc.?
Definitely worth checking out for some great insight and good stories for anyone interested in starting a label or wondering about running one in general.
