The New Pornographers "Challengers" LP

West coast power-pop power-folk super-group The New Pornographers are releasing the band’s fourth album Challengers (Out August 21st on Matador Records) in two editions: Standard and Executive. The Executive version is part of the Buy Early Get Now pre-ordering campaign and features the entire album, early access to a full stream, a box set consisting of three bonus discs and advance notice of ticket buying opportunities (probably not useful east of Montreal).

The “some-assembly required” burn-it-yourself box will have b-sides, demos and alternate mixes (disc one), “Live From The Future” (disc two) and a collection of videos, photos and artwork (disc three). Plus the label is claiming it will contain songs not even recorded yet. Basically, it is a completist’s wet dream featuring every b-side, every demo, every alternate mix, every video, and every photo associated with the release of the album.

“Challengers” follows a similar NP breakdown, with nine tracks penned by Carl Newman and three by Destroyer’s Dan Bejar (each happened to contribute their own “New York” song as well). Apparently there will be references to the following artists throughout: Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, Gene Pitney, Camus, Roxy Music, Sparks, Shocking Blue, Paul McCartney, Harry Nilsson, Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, Brian Wilson, 5th Dimension and Subway Sect. Take a sneak listen yourself, including the first appearance of a French horn: My Rights Versus Yours.
