chromewaves – Dancin’ In The Wind«

while most everyone I know who’s heard her has been beguiled, the numbers that seems to amount to are far less than she deserves.

I`ll strongly second that comment – considering the attention some people get today in music all the while lacking in a comparable level of talent – if having any to begin with – she certainly deserves all the attention she has been getting and hopefully we are still only seeing the tip of the iceberg in that regards.

In other Jenn news, seems her new video for Dreamer is finding plenty of fans – Elbo.ws What’s Hot: Videos has Dreamer currently at number 10(although earlier this week it hit number 6).

Glasgow Gets Clever Fighting Unwanted Show Posters

I am personally a fan of of show [and other such] posters around town(s), I find them a measure of activity in a given locale if nothing else. Except often there are examples of outstanding design incorporated with such posters making them nice to look at themselves [though not always].

However, I have to give credit where credit is due and over in Glasgow they have come up with a pretty clever means of addressing the issue there:

Canceled signs, above, block some posters while others are painted out. Pictures: Jamie Simpson

From the Evening Times [this is via Boing Boing]:

A council source said: “We can be a complete pain in the neck to the people doing this because the money and time they spend is completely wasted.

A little evil perhaps, but still smart.

The article notes that such posters are illegal there, for which I will have to take their word.
There have been long standing and ongoing debates over the issue locally here in Halifax as well as across the country. I have even been interviewed for a news story in the past on the issue and the need for such promotional opportunities for bands.

Some venues, like Zaphod Beeblebrox in Ottawa even offer a page on postering etiquette and law.

Here`s a summary (from 2004) written by Waye Mason of the Halifax Pop Explosion on the still-pretty-much-the-same-situation here in Halifax:

In the olden days before HRM, postering was governed by both the Provincial “litter abatement act” but mostly it was enforced through Ordinance 19, originally passed in 1936, of the old City of Halifax. Also this S800 in Dartmouth, I only just found tonight while looking.

In Ramsden v. Peterborough (City) 1993 the Supreme Court of Canada held, 9 to 0 that it was your constitutional right to poster… the City and then HRM did not update the by-law.

The Supreme Court was pretty specific. Posters should not face the street to distract drivers, should not be on street signs (so, no STOP THE ECOCIDE stickers) and should not be put on electrical boxes or impede the ability of power or other utility workers to access, repair and maintain the equipment.

Also, the municipality can as always put reasonable limits on your freedom of expression, so if they had poster penises and posters boards every place in town, on every main street, on every telephone poll, they could restrict the placement on utility poles… and you can never, ever, poster on switch boxes, on stop signs, no pasting stuff on the access hatches to the base of a light pole.

What is funny is the old Ordinance actually has all these reasonable restrictions about where you could and could not “post billsâ€? but you need to pay $125.00 to get a license to be allowed to post bills. In 1994 I was told by the city solicitor that the Chief of Police (HPD) was the city official who licensed people to post bills. The Chief’s office said “we don’t and won’t license you.”

I suspect the Court would find the $125 fee an unreasonable restriction on Charter rights. But I am sure the fact that they have a bunch of rules and will not let anyone actually get the license is an unreasonable restriction.

I always tell the Pop Explosion poster volunteers “If you get hassled, ask for a ticket, I will take it and go to court.” In 9 years, no tickets. I have personally been hassled twice by the police, both times I have said “Give me a ticket.” Both times the officer has walked away grumbling.

On Vacation (!!!!)
Posted in Artists/Bands on 08.22.07 07:36

Gone to Cape Breton for the next five days.
I do not think (and I am hoping) that there will be not an internet connection where we are.

Posting will resume with some normalcy on Monday.
In the coming weeks if things are a little scattered it is not due to any loss of interest in this, but just the opposite.
I am working on longer posts as well as spending time on a new design and tweaking the performance of the site (from my perspective) and hopefully making it reader friendly as well. Just doing that stuff eats into writing time.

Cheers!

From Pitchfork

Toronto troublemakers Holy Fuck have signed to new Beggars Group label Young Turks for the release of the creatively titled LP, the follow-up to their 2005 self-titled debut album. LP was mixed by Eli Janney of Girls Against Boys and Dave Newfeld of Broken Social Scene.

LP will come out on October 23, and the band will build anticipation for the album via a North American tour with fellow Canadians Wolf Parade. Those dates begin September 6 in Victoria, British Columbia, and the band will hit the European tour trail later in the fall.

Pavilion Turns 3 This Weekend

Congrats to Chris and everyone else deserving on the Pavilion’s third anniversary.

Too late for tonight’s show [which featured the Letter Unfolds, Athaliahs, The Blessing, and Shelter With Thieves] but the big show of their weekend is Saturday.

Headlining is Protest the Hero who play a show with I Hate Sally, The Holly Springs Disaster, and Machete Avenue on Saturday, Aug. 18. Tickets are $14 in advance ($16 at the door).

More from Stephen Cooke via the Herald:

CONSIDERING HOW HARD it is to keep a licensed establishment up and running in this neck of the woods, the survival of the all-ages Pavilion on the Halifax Common is an important achievement.

The current incarnation of the Pavilion celebrates its third anniversary this week with a trio of shows highlighting what the former City of Halifax Parks and Recreation facility does best: showcasing local bands and providing a convenient stage for out-of-town acts with a sizeable under-19 following.

“Our survival comes out of a desire for people to have a place to play, and hang out,” says Pavilion manager Chris Smith. “We’ve got a good scene here; not huge, but supportive.

“It’s enough to give us a good backbone, and an incentive to produce more shows. It’s also important to have the support of the city . . . They give us guidelines to work by, but they also give us enough control to do what works.”

The Pavilion has proved an asset to the city’s teenage musicians and their fans, and also been an important factor in involving the all-ages audience in events like the Halifax Pop Explosion, Music Nova Scotia’s Music Week, the East Coast Music Awards and the Juno Awards.

The celebrations at the cinderblock bunker start on Friday, with local favourites the Letter Unfolds, Athaliahs, the Blessing and Shelter With Thieves, starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $8.

Then on Saturday, Whitby, Ont., postcore bands Protest the Hero and I Hate Sally headline, with Saskatchewan’s The Holly Springs Disaster, London piano/guitar duo Machete Avenue and Halifax’s Autumnstorm. Advance tickets are $14 at www.ticketpro.ca (1-888-311-9090) or Ticketpro outlets, including Halifax Forum, Alderney Landing, United Bookstore, Newsbreak Cafés and Newstands and Greenlyph Computers. Tickets are also $16 at the door for this 6:30 p.m. show.

On Sunday the Pavilion wraps up the anniversary with a deluxe showcase starting at 5 p.m. with Gamma Gamma Rays, Great Plains, Tupperware Remix Party, Fight Fight Fight, the Rescue, the Pact, the Dishonest Mailmen and In This Style. Admission is $8.

As for the future of the Pavilion, Smith says he’d like to find ways to expand the venue, making it more dynamic and able to present larger shows. “We’re still in the idea stage,” he says. “But it’s come a long way from just being a stage in a concrete bunker. We’re always looking for new ways to attract more kids.”

By the way, that tour featuring Protest the Hero et al also stops at St. Anne’s Hall in Glace Bay tonight and the Westville Cadet Hall in Pictou County on Friday, with a later 19+ show at the Attic on Saturday.

more music mondays [and tuesdays] just got a lil’ easier: Radio3 Player Is Now Embeddable

Radio3 Player Is Now Embeddable

The autoplay feature [on EVERY music site/service] needs to, pardon the language, fuck off. What do you think the odds are that I, music loving fanatic I am, have music playing already as many others would as well? Huge pet peeve with MySpace as well as Radio3 – if there`s a way to turn that off please let me know.

Otherwise - this is simply great!

They even fixed my one pet peeve struck out above before I had a chance to post this!!
Autoplay = False, Happy Bloggers = True
Hell yeah!

Check it out for yourself or take a listen below
