We were on 604 and Universal in Canada, and they’ve gone out of their way to make life difficult for us lately
- Chris Kinnon singer/guitarist for Lions In The Street
Now I would pay BIG money to see a literal example of this post’s title but I expect that will never happen.
What will happen, on October 30th, is that CK+lawyer’s label 604 Records will release an album under the name Lions In The Street.
The issue being the band recorded said album two years ago when they were signed as The Years. And subsequently dropped.
All round a shit thing to do - from the perspective of running a business I would never trust them as they see nothing wrong packaging an album as something it is not (release it as The Years with stickers indicating who the band is now if they need to put it out that bad)
From the perspective of LITS fans I would hate 604 Records. As a music fan, I am assuming at least one remains at 604 - I am also baffled at how they can justify this as fans themselves.
We’re not embarrassed by the record. It’s just not us. It’s not Lions In The Street. It’s The Years. And it’s a great record. When we made it we were really proud, and it broke our hearts when they wouldn’t release it. They wouldn’t even let us finish it.
Lions In The Streets have been building a solid reputation for themselves over the last several months - their name has popped up numerous times in all manner of places from industry trades to blogs - here’s hoping this experience only helps to propel the band forward with the music they are making today.

The ECHO Songwriting Prize is taking votes (deadline September 28, 2007) for “the most innovative, creative and artistic songs created in the past year by emerging songwriters in Canada.” The songwriter will receive a $5,000 and, according to an article in the fall issue of Socan’s Words & Music, there had been two local songs in the running (In-Flight Safety’s “Lost (The March Song)” & Great Plains “Unnatural”). The jurors whittled it down to the following 5:
- Nathan’s “Scarecrow”
- Chad VanGaalen’s “Graveyard”
- Feuermusik’s “Doppelspiel”
- Abdominal’s “Pedal Pusher”
- The Besnard Lakes’ “Devastation”

Erin Costelo to release debut EP, The Trouble & the Truth
The Music Room, Saturday, September 15, 8pm
(Halifax, NS) – Singer/songwriter Erin Costelo will be releasing her debut EP, The Trouble & the Truth, at The Music Room (6181 Lady Hammond Road) on Saturday, September 15, 8pm. The show will also feature an opening set from Al Tuck and No Action.
From the first few ghostly notes of Erin Costelo’s The Trouble & The Truth, the mood is set for a unique artistic experience. Made up of piano led compositions that divide their focus between jazz informed songwriting and playful experimental arrangements, the album’s seven tracks dodge any kind of convention. Costelo’s warm and accomplished vocals blanket each track in a hushed intimacy as her lyrics deliver a hard won perspective rare this early in an artist’s career.
With tips of the hat to everything from Tom Waits to Brill Building pop, The Trouble & The Truth is a timeless collection of songs that strives well beyond the standard.
The album features guest performances from Al Tuck, Lukas Pearse, Andrew Glencross, Caleb Hamilton, Gillian Costelo, Alex Porter, Ron Koop, Bernard Kehler.
Admission to the show is $12 and $20 with a CD. Tickets available at the door.

Update: Turns out demand must have been higher than expected…that will cost you $7 (details here).

Team Willow is taking the next logical step in co-habitation. No, the roommates of 6015 Willow Street in Halifax are not getting married…they are releasing an action-packed DVD that will capture a portion of the local music scene like never before. Considering the talent that has passed through that place (Paul Hammond, Michael Catano, Jeff Parker, Mark Black, Greg Boone, and Stephan MacLeod for starters) and the various connections to the TV/Film world, this should be an amazing performance film. It features 20 bands playing in various rooms of the Willow Street household over August 24-26, 2007. No release information is available as of now, but here are some behind the scenes photos (and a breakdown by day 1, 2, & 3).
The bands showcased in this ambitious project include The Stolen Minks, Die Brücke, The Medium Mood, The Holy Shroud, The Got To Get Got, The Memories Attack, A History Of, Dog Day, Play Guitar, The Hold, Prisoners, North Of America, The Hold, Ov Gramme, The Just Barelys, Tomcat Combat, The Maynards, The Superfantastics, Windom Earle, Take On Me, and VKNGS. I promise to pass on more info as it becomes available.
Speaking of DVDs, the cover for the upcoming B.A. Johnson 2-day live at Gus’ pub spectacular This Is What 110% Smells Like (trailer) has hit the net. Take a look at the madness:

Performances by the Stance, the Just Barelys, Old Man Luedecke, Die Brucke, Brent Randall & His Pinecones, Windom Earle and the Maynards were captured at the event celebrating “eight years of touring the country and releasing four albums”. Tour dates in support of the release include:
Sept 18th: Sackville NB - Duckys w/ Bloodshot Bill
Sept 19th: Sydney NS - Upstairs Club w/ Bloodshot Bill
Sept 20th: Cornerbrook NFLD - Casual Jacks w/ Bloodshot Bill + Mountain and the Trees
Sept 21st: St. Johns NFLD - Ship w/ Bloodshot Bill + the Idlers
Sept 22nd: St. Johns NFLD - CBTGS w/ Bloodshot Bill + Mountains and the Trees
Sept 26th: Moncton NB - Paramount w/ Bloodshot Bill
Sept 27th: Charlottetown PEI - Babas Lounge w/ Bloodshot Bill + Windom Earle

Here is an interesting QuickTime version (and stills) of Jill Barber’s song “Hardline” that was directed by Sara St Onge (Final Fantasy, Gentleman Reg, Ghettosocks, The Diableros). Any explanations or theories that relate to the meaning would be greatly appreciated.
