Music Nova Scotia is pleased to congratulate five Nova Scotian artists who are nominated for 2008 JUNO Awards, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS).

Joel Plaskett is once again nominated for Songwriter of the Year. This time, it’s for his efforts on “Fashionable People” “Nothing More To Say” and “Face of the Earth” from Ashtray Rock. Plaskett recently cleaned up with six awards from Music Nova Scotia and he is also nominated for seven East Coast Music Awards this year.

Wintersleep’s Welcome to the Night Sky is nominated for Alternative Album of the Year and the band itself is nominated for New Group of the Year. Wintersleep is also nominated for five East Coast Music Awards this year.

The Nova Scotian urban scene receives two nods, as Skratch Bastid from Halifax is nominated for Producer of the Year for his landmark efforts on Buck 65’s “Way Back When” and “The Outskirts” from Situation. Skratch Bastid spends much of his time as a DJ, touring across Canada and has produced his own album, Taking Care of Business.

And long-time rapper Classified from Enfield continues to ride the wave of accolades with a nomination for Rap Recording of the Year for Fall From Paradise. He’s been touring extensively and also recently released the DVD/CD combo While You Were Sleeping. He also won Urban Recording of the Year from Music Nova Scotia for Hitch Hikin’ Music and is nominated for three East Coast Music Awards this year.

Sultry Chanteuse Jill Barber’s album For All Time is nominated for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year (solo). Originally from Ontario, Barber has proudly called Halifax home for the last several years and recently won Female/Artist Recording of the Year from Music Nova Scotia. She is also nominated for Songwriter of the Year and Entertainer of the Year from the East Coast Music Awards this year.

Music Nova Scotia would also like to pass along congratulations to Holy Fuck, co-founded by Yarmouth native Brian Borcherdt and often featuring members from Wintersleep. Holy Fuck’s LP is nominated for Alternative Album of the Year.

The 37th Annual Juno Awards will take place on April 6 in Calgary, Alberta with host comedian Russell Peters and will be broadcast nationwide live on CTV.

And I would like to thank Music Nova Scotia for writing Holy Fuck - instead of using something silly like Holy F***!!
