Right now I have Mardeen and Yellow Jacket Avenger in the space. Then there’s also a group of local music super stars including members from the Prospector’s Union, the Heavy Blinkers, the Establishment, Sleepless Nights, and Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees rehearsing for a Roy Orbison tribute show.
Earlier in the evening there was the always enjoyable Stance, a new reggae group and a new hip hop duo [we don't get

enough good hip hop in here unfortunately].

All great bands, composed of great musicians, who just happen to be great people too.

Facebook vs. MySpace

As of this minute, Coldplay has 392,819 friends on MySpace and 43,156 fans on Facebook. MySpace’s Coldplay page has four songs on it; Facebook’s one. MySpace’s are embeddable on your page; Facebook’s are not, yet. MySpace supports for-pay downloads (they’re priced absurdly high, but that’s not MySpace’s fault); Facebook does not. MySpace’s page has some personality; but Facebook’s has a user video and a discography. They both have band info and touring info.

Don’t count the “old guy” out just yet.

Some music and not so music related time wasters

If you know a ridiculious amount of music, you may enjoy challenging yourself at this site who’s stated intention is “to provide a place for people to help other people identify music.”

Still in beta but it does what it says it does.

You know your curious!!
My only complaint is the lack of science backing that site. But apparently I am safe as long as I am not swarmed by more than 26 five year olds.

Saw this this morning on locals and then again on the Listening Post, fun for listening purposes. Read the Listening Post post for a mix making review. Selected some random mixes and found a few new bands to look into and had my childhood blasted back at me unexpectedly [and just about every period of my life I have forgotten- when was the last time I listened to the Judgment Night soundtrack?!?].

http://www.finetune.com/ is a more complicated looking version of a mixtape site that I have never used but have book marked if you want to compare.

“Now the majors are what they used to think I was: history”
On decision [and ability] to self release her latest album.

Love that attitude.

Such ventures still remain the realm of past or current superstars but if such artists continue to self release it will eventually [hopefully] force labels to adjust for the better the deals they offer artists at all levels. Trickle down effect i guess.

You need buttons for your band or business?
Well they make buttons. That is why buttons is in their name. For reals.

Who are they, well you will need to visit their site to find out, but at least one of them has been the focus of hate spewing posts here before over their hatred of the local music scene.

The Mexican Emo Wars [!?!?!]

You can’t make shit like this up.

Via Exclaim:

Chances are if you aren’t emo, you hate emo. But you likely don’t hate this straight-haired, massacre-lined subculture as much as the Mexicans do. In recent weeks, a wave of emo bashings has swept across Mexico, several news agencies have reported, fuelled by punks, rockabillies, goths, metalheads and basically anyone who’s not emo.

According to Daniel Hernandez, who’s been covering the anti-emo riots on his blog Intersections, the violence began March 7, when an estimated 800 young people poured into the Mexican city of Queretaro’s main plaza “hunting” for emo kids to pummel.

In talking about this I have received a wide range of reactions – most start with laughter, and while definitely surreal it would almost be a great thing if I didn’t feel bad for the emo kids getting their asses kicked for liking music [everyone else hates].

But they still love music right, shouldn’t that count for something?

More at Exclaim from whom I also snagged the Spanish news report below [kind of insane].

Reznor vs. Radiohead: Innovation Smackdown

Go vote over at Wired

Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have been taking turns giving the music industry the finger. The British band made headlines last October for releasing In Rainbows without the support (read: control) of a record label, and Trent Reznor’s group followed suit with last month’s Ghosts I-IV.

The two bands have also been busy one-upping each other with their innovative promotion strategies. We were tempted to let the groups coexist peacefully at the forward edge of digital distribution until Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor accused Radiohead of betraying fans by selling them low-quality files. In light of Reznor’s accusations, we put together a 10-round, voting-enabled smackdown to find out which band is really blazing the trail of innovation.
