Cupcakes to kick cancer’s ass with!? Sounds good no? Come enjoy all things cupcake, meet some new friends, raise some money for a great organization!

Any money raised will be going to the Canadian Cancer Society. I have worked and volunteered for the CCS. I can tell you first hand they have many programs where money raised directly impacts the lives of of people fighting cancer. From helping supplement the cost of drugs patients need to providing them a place to stay when they need to travel to Halifax for treatments. The services they provide make a world of difference to the people they help.

For those interested in baking cupcakes, you can sign up until this Friday. There will be prizes awarded the best cupcakes including some swag from Johnny Cupcakes.

For those that just like to eat cupcakes, there is already a pretty good list of bakers signed up with most contributing multiple kinds of cupcakes. So take a walk this Sunday coming and stop in for some sweet lil’cakes!

Kudos to fellow sponsors for their support. The Hub is the venue for Cupcake Camp. While photographer Chelle Wootten will be snapping shots of all the edible goodness for the bakers and then folks enjoying their hard work during the event. Chelle also took pics for the poster and it was put together by one Isaac Hansen.

In case you cannot read the text on the poster, it says:

From Pampelmoose:

Today I came across Aphilas a DJ duo out of Finland who mix electronic and organic downbeat into trip hop mish mash. The interesting part to this music discovery is that the EP is released as MP3s for free from Miasmah a free MP3 record label

Pamplemoose is one of my regular reads, what is it, in his own words:

Dave Allen, bass player for Gang of Four, posts daily on this music blog about well, music. Beyond that the scope embraces popular culture, online distribution, blogs, podcasts, the decline of the music industry and a large dose of what’s going on in the vibrant Portland, Oregon music scene. Pampelmoose also offers free and legal music downloads for your enjoyment.

I have mentioned a blog post about the importance of local in every 8th post I have made and it will be finished soon, but I do appreciate that he feels it is worth covering his own scene where he is residing and that doing so is an important part of his blogging as I feel it is regardless of what else you cover.

Check it out regardless of whether you want local perspectives or not!

And we’re just as excited as that little guy is!
And we’re as late as….aaaahhh we’ll just leave it as late. Belated even!

Belated. Happy belated birthday to us. This blog made it through its first year sometime at the end of October. The majority of my family is known for belated birthday wishes, well cards and gifts. We usually call [chat online?!] each other at least.

We’ll consider this our birthday present.

Its been fun – via online means at least, I’ve met plenty of great – music loving – people.
I’ve learned a hell of a lot about what’s happening in music.

Still picking away at changes too – part of not writing lately has been figuring out what the focus of this was again [local*], and working on appearances as well – added weekly updates of CDKU’s charts, a link to Zunior’s free weekly sampler, maybe a few other things coming.

To anyone who took the time to read [or comment, or send me emails/links]: Thank you.

* few other things too but…starts (t)here

Our suggestions:
Start the day with breakfast at Coastal Coffee – it hurts to not say the Ardmore, but Coastal is pretty damn sweet + I really enjoy the few pieces of fruit added to each plate to finish breakfast off with. I also like how the owner/chef brings you your food. Nice touches.

We’ll mimic Joel’s recommendation for used bookstore Last Word around the corner from the Rock Garden on Windsor St. – also our personal fave.

Weather permitting walk downtown, take a ferry ride to Dartmouth, upon your return walk the board walk, continuing at the board walk’s end to Point Pleasant Park and have a picnic or just relax.

For your picnic, either before or after taking the ferry [if it is Saturday] head to the Farmer’s Market downtown as well.

We’ll suggest you end the day by taking a date to a nice dinner at jane’s on the common
Then maybe catch a show at one of the venues noted by Julie, or some live comedy [see a picnicface PSA below], a movie at the Oxford. Plenty to do here. Lots of other places to eat at too. And as you can tell from the suggestions Joi and I like food.

For lots of other suggestions to pass this weekend check out the Coast’s current best of issue [we even get mentioned]

Team Willow is taking the next logical step in co-habitation. No, the roommates of 6015 Willow Street in Halifax are not getting married…they are releasing an action-packed DVD that will capture a portion of the local music scene like never before. Considering the talent that has passed through that place (Paul Hammond, Michael Catano, Jeff Parker, Mark Black, Greg Boone, and Stephan MacLeod for starters) and the various connections to the TV/Film world, this should be an amazing performance film. It features 20 bands playing in various rooms of the Willow Street household over August 24-26, 2007. No release information is available as of now, but here are some behind the scenes photos (and a breakdown by day 1, 2, & 3).

The bands showcased in this ambitious project include The Stolen Minks, Die Brücke, The Medium Mood, The Holy Shroud, The Got To Get Got, The Memories Attack, A History Of, Dog Day, Play Guitar, The Hold, Prisoners, North Of America, The Hold, Ov Gramme, The Just Barelys, Tomcat Combat, The Maynards, The Superfantastics, Windom Earle, Take On Me, and VKNGS. I promise to pass on more info as it becomes available.

Speaking of DVDs, the cover for the upcoming B.A. Johnson 2-day live at Gus’ pub spectacular This Is What 110% Smells Like (trailer) has hit the net. Take a look at the madness:

Performances by the Stance, the Just Barelys, Old Man Luedecke, Die Brucke, Brent Randall & His Pinecones, Windom Earle and the Maynards were captured at the event celebrating “eight years of touring the country and releasing four albums”. Tour dates in support of the release include:

Any explanations or theories that relate to the meaning would be greatly appreciated.
