Claude Samson is one of those guys who is either clearly insane or a misunderstood genius [maybe both?]. Out of the literally hundreds of guitar players that have passed through my jam spaces Claude remains one of the most outstanding players. From finger picking blue-grass, to jazz, to country to straight up rock I have yet to see anyone play a variety of styles here with such ease and grace.
Apparently he once lied about being able to read music to get a cruise ship job but was able to pull it off anyways through hard work, a bit of help from fellow band members and his playing abilities. While the following video isn’t a guitar wank-fest it does illustrate him doing something else I couldn’t do.
I’m impressed he a) came up with the idea, b) get off his stoned ass [wild guess based on a few scenes in the video] and actually put it together, and c) is able to pull it off.
And for the record, Claude hates the voice over.
It looks weird but fun has hell! This be a video of my little invention, It is an interpretation of the “one person band” ( To be politically correct), concept which I electrified. My friend Pete Davison had his camera over one day and took these snapshots of me playing around. I made up the parts on the spot, which are a bit loose, but you’ll get the idea. I just purchased the 8 string last November. In time I plan on exploring this new found way of playing. Hope you find it interesting. CLAUDE SAMSON HALIFAX, CANADA
Heartland’s theme is Dreamer by indie singer Jenn Grant.
“It’s orchestral and has a modern element. I keep saying that she’s kind of like the new Feist. But she totally has her own original sound,” said Andrea Higgins, the show’s music supervisor. “It kind of grabs me and it’s just pretty, the lyrics work for the show. It’s kind of bittersweet, and the show’s like that. It’s not cookie-cutter happy.”
If you want to attend any shows [you can RSVP for multiple/all the shows in one email] you’ve gotta send your name and preferred show [or shows] to popinsessionsrsvp@yahoo.com.
The Good News
wintersleep, Their Majesties, Jill Barber, Brent Randall and His Pinecones and Two Hours Traffic all make appearances in season one of CBC Country Canada`s In Session. The program films Radio 3 sessions you may have heard already (or not). In addition to the locals mentioned above there is a who’s who of Canadian talent represented (see full schedule below).
Series Promo
Producer Jordana Ross has been hard at work on this series as shooting started (the pilot) in June of 2006 in the Vancouver studios and the season wrapped in March 2007 in Toronto [just in time to catch Their Majesties]. Congrats to Jordana on seeing this get to air.
The Bad News (until…)
Unfortunately you will need satellite or digital cable to be able to watch these shows (well until someone puts them on a torrent site). If you do have one such service you can find CBC Country Canada on Rogers 277 , Cogeco 166 , ExpressView 641 , StarChoice 512 , Shaw 96 & Videotron 106 (for more service providers see http://cbccountrycanada.ca/CountryCanada.pdf).
Unless we are warned otherwise I may see about posting the torrents to any shows that turn up too.
I personally would rather be able to see the show than not - although this is partially having me consider digital cable and a DVR unit.
Regardless, episodes air Wednesdays at 6pm, 10pm & midnight ET. Episodes will repeat on Sunday at 5am ET and Monday at 3am ET. For more information about In Session (or if you caught last night’s show and want to let her know what you thought) contact Jordana Ross at jordana_ross@cbc.ca

Team Willow is taking the next logical step in co-habitation. No, the roommates of 6015 Willow Street in Halifax are not getting married…they are releasing an action-packed DVD that will capture a portion of the local music scene like never before. Considering the talent that has passed through that place (Paul Hammond, Michael Catano, Jeff Parker, Mark Black, Greg Boone, and Stephan MacLeod for starters) and the various connections to the TV/Film world, this should be an amazing performance film. It features 20 bands playing in various rooms of the Willow Street household over August 24-26, 2007. No release information is available as of now, but here are some behind the scenes photos (and a breakdown by day 1, 2, & 3).
The bands showcased in this ambitious project include The Stolen Minks, Die Brücke, The Medium Mood, The Holy Shroud, The Got To Get Got, The Memories Attack, A History Of, Dog Day, Play Guitar, The Hold, Prisoners, North Of America, The Hold, Ov Gramme, The Just Barelys, Tomcat Combat, The Maynards, The Superfantastics, Windom Earle, Take On Me, and VKNGS. I promise to pass on more info as it becomes available.
Speaking of DVDs, the cover for the upcoming B.A. Johnson 2-day live at Gus’ pub spectacular This Is What 110% Smells Like (trailer) has hit the net. Take a look at the madness:
Performances by the Stance, the Just Barelys, Old Man Luedecke, Die Brucke, Brent Randall & His Pinecones, Windom Earle and the Maynards were captured at the event celebrating “eight years of touring the country and releasing four albums”. Tour dates in support of the release include:

Here is an interestingQuickTime version (and stills) of Jill Barber’s song “Hardline” that was directed by Sara St Onge (Final Fantasy, Gentleman Reg, Ghettosocks, The Diableros). Any explanations or theories that relate to the meaning would be greatly appreciated.
while most everyone I know who’s heard her has been beguiled, the numbers that seems to amount to are far less than she deserves.
I`ll strongly second that comment - considering the attention some people get today in music all the while lacking in a comparable level of talent - if having any to begin with - she certainly deserves all the attention she has been getting and hopefully we are still only seeing the tip of the iceberg in that regards.
In other Jenn news, seems her new video for Dreamer is finding plenty of fans - Elbo.ws What’s Hot: Videos has Dreamer currently at number 10(although earlier this week it hit number 6).
